Comedy Stand Up Routine Explained
There is a dark stage, and only one light is on, the audience is quiet and awaiting for the next person to provide them with at least 5 minutes of good time. You walk to the microphone, the light is on you, blinds you, and doesn’t let you see the crowd in front of you that well, but even so, you open your mouth and give them your opening line. The people in front of you are waiting for a comedy stand up routine that will make them laugh
The first second after you delivered your opening line you will know if you act is catchy or not. The people can either start laughing, filling the whole room, or it can remain quiet. Needless to say if they start laughing is okay, if they don’t, then you’re done!
It’s never easy going on stage for the first time. There are lots of stand up comics that will tell you that their first time was filled with emotions, and that stand up comedy isn’t as easy as it might seem. However, there are some tips you can use to improve your act and make performing easy.
Now, if you are interested in stand up comedy and dream of having and introduction that goes ” From New York City, Comedy Central presents” and your name, or you want to be on Saturday Night Live and give your audience a good time, then you need to be funny, to have good material and live talent.
So, what can you do? Well, first you need to come up with some humor. All stand up comedians, before they managed to get into the comedy circuit and perform in comedy clubs sat in front of their mirror and came up with some fresh and funny material that helped them build a fan base. So that’s what you want to do. Look into the mirror and check yourself out from head to toes. Can you say that you resemble with someone famous? Or can you make jokes on the way you look? Think about your mom, how crazy she was, think about the members of your family,think about your religion, ethnicity, your color, your pet, your hobbies, your special experiences and come up with your own comic act and style.
There are lots of students, actors, and regular guys that want to become a stand up comedian. But, before you’ll land into a comedy festival or appear on national television and have a million dollar career, you’ll want to train yourself and partake in as many open mics shows as possible and learn how to bring your audience closer to you.
So, summing it all up, here’s what you need to do: – practice your jokes in front of the mirror – practice your act in front of the mirror – write down your jokes – always carry a recorder or some pen and paper with you since you don’t know when inspiration strikes – grow some balls and head down to all open mics in your area – repeat the above until you managed to be funny and have success in small clubs
It’s not as easy as pie being a stand up comedian and having a killer comedy stand up routine, but if you want, you can do it. You either have it, or you can make it. Remember, there are not many comedy stand up routines out there that are made on the spot. They are rehearsed in front of the mirror countless times and adapted to the audience.
